Tarte Flambeé also known as Flammkuchen is a specialty from the region of Alsace. Alsace is located in the eastern part of France next to Germany and Switzerland. The classic Tarte Flambeé is made with just flour, water, salt and oil and topped with onions, crème fraiche and bacon.

But nowadays some top it with zucchini, pumpkin, ham, grated cheese and so on. You can also make Tarte Flambeé as a sweet treat with apple or plum slices sprinkled with cinnamon – sugar. And there you have it, a hearty meal in front of you in no time.

Tarte Flambeé (Flammkuchen) step – by – step photo recipe

Make the dough:

1. In a bowl combine flour, water, oil and salt. Using your hands or a hand mixer combine the ingredients to a firm dough.

Cover the dough with a kitchen towel or cling film and set aside while preparing the topping.

Next preheat the oven to 200°C, with both top and bottom heat. Line the baking sheet with a parchment paper as well.

Make the topping:

2. In the meantime peel the onion and thinly slice it. Put the onions in a bowl and cover them with hot water. Let stand for 1 minute and drain the onion slices. This will get rid of the raw onion taste.

NOTE: You can also put the sliced onion in a bowl with approximately 2 tablespoons of water and put in the microwave for 30 seconds.

3. Cut the bacon as well as fresh chives into small pieces.

4. Season sour cream with salt and pepper and mix well.

Roll out dough

5. Lightly flour the surface. Using a rolling pin thinly roll out the dough into a rectangle form or any form that your baking sheet is having.

Top and bake

Using your hands lift the dough onto the prepared baking sheet.

Spread the cream uniformly thorough over the surface of the rolled out dough. Align onion slices on the dough spread with cream and sprinkle with bacon.

Bake for 25 minutes.

NOTE: After 20 minutes be sure to check the tart and keep checking it so that I won’t burn. I always bake mine between 20 – 25 minutes.

After 25 minutes remove the tart from the oven.

Sprinkle with fresh chives and enjoy!
