Namibian Spice Blend (Kapana Spice Recipe)

Namibian Spice Blend (Kapana Spice Recipe)

Kapana spice is a spicy and flavorful Namibian spice blend, that’s mostly used in many Namibian dishes such as kapana – grilled meat that’s cut into strips.

As a Namibian living abroad it’s not always easy finding ingredients from Namibia or Southern Africa in general at African shops, especially here in Germany. So I used to bring kapana spice from home.

After going through the list of ingredients on kapana spice package, I’ve realized that there are so many artificial ingredients in it. Thus why I’ve decided it was about time I make my own version of kapana spice blend.

It’s cheap, super easy and quick to make, no hidden ingredients and it tastes close to the kapana spice blend back home.

Kapana spice can be used as a dry rub on vegetables, meats or to dip in your meat after grilling, like we do it with kapana back home. It also makes a perfect gift from the kitchen for your family and friends.

I know that it’s hardly to go wrong with this recipe. But it’s very important that you let the rub infuse for a few days for the flavors to meld together before using.

What you’ll need to make Namibian all purpose BBQ spice blend

  • 1 tablespoon garlic powder
  • 1 tablespoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes
  • 1 tablespoon dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon ginger powder
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper

How To Make Southern African BBQ Spice Mix

All you have to do is combine all the ingredients together.

Store in an airtight container in a cool and dry place. Let the rub infuse for a few days for the flavors to meld together before using.

This kapana rub will keep for months if stored in an airtight container in a cool and dry place. It also makes a perfect gift from the kitchen for your family and friends.

One of my favorite ways to use kapana spice is this fried chicken wing recipe.
