Easy Tomato Mozzarella Salad

Italian classic, this tomato mozzarella salad otherwise known as Insalata Caprese is beautiful to look at, effortless, light, refreshing and absolutely delicious.

Sometimes simple dishes like this classic Italian tomato mozzarella salad are the best! This tomato mozzarella salad is so easy to make and you can whip it up in less than 10 minutes. All what you need to make a flavorful caprese salad is good quality balsamic vinegar, good quality fresh mozzarella cheese, good quality tomatoes (homegrown, from farmers market or store-bought organic tomatoes), fresh basil and olive oil.


Serve this salad for brunch, as a light lunch/ dinner or pair it with grilled meat or homemade bread.

What you’ll need to make tomato mozzarella salad

  • 7 medium tomatoes
  • 5 tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 tablespoons balsamic vinegar
  • 250 g (8.8 oz) fresh mozzarella cheese, drained
  • some fresh basil leaves
  • salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
  • Balsamic reduction (balsamic glaze) for garnish

How to make tomato mozzarella basil salad

Wash the tomatoes very well and shake off excess water and cut them into thin slices (about 1 cm/ 0.4 inch). Don’t forget to remove the core!!. Cut mozzarella into thin slices as well.

Arrange tomato and mozzarella slices on a platter or in a tart dish alternatively.

Hand – torn fresh basil leaves and scatter them on every mozzarella slice. Drizzle with balsamic vinegar and olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper.

Garnish with balsamic reduction (balsamic glaze) if you like. Let rest for few minutes and enjoy!
