Apple Crumb Tart

Apple Crumb Tart

This apple crumb tart is a family favorite. It’s very simple to make, uses uncomplicated ingredients, and looks and tastes amazing.

Made up of a perfectly buttery flaky shortcrust pasty that’s made from scratch, filled with apples dusted with cinnamon and then finished off with crumble that’s made together with the pastry. So, you don’t have to make the crumble extra.

The apple crumble cake tastes great with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, vanilla sauce (aka. Vanilla custard), whipped cream or just like that.

I made this apple crumb tart yesterday at my 4-year-old daughter’s request. This morning we had it for breakfast and as always, we enjoyed every bit of it. Now I’m forced to bake again before going to bed.

How to make and roll out shortcrust pastry

Begin by greasing a 28 cm (11 inches) flan dish with butter. In a bowl combine an egg, sugar, butter, flour, and a pinch of salt.

Using your hands mix all the ingredients together to form a firm dough. Divide the dough into two doughs: 2/3 (two thirds) and 1/3 (one third).

Roll out the 2/3 pastry dough on a lightly dusted parchment paper or silicon mat with a dusted rolling pin. Then gently turn the rolled-out pastry into the prepared flan dish (tart tin) and remove the silicon mat or parchment paper.

Cut off the overhanging pastry. Then press the pastry into the flan dish with your hands.

Use the pastry that you cut off just to make sure that the bottom and the sides are nicely covered. Refrigerate while making the apple filling. Also refrigerate the 1/3 dough.

Make the apple filling

Next preheat the oven to 180 ° C (360 °F), with both top and bottom heat. Now peel the apples, cut them into halves, remove the core and cut into thin slices.

Combine sliced apples with ground cinnamon and lemon juice. Feel free to add a hand full raisins or almond flakes to your apple filling.

Fill the tart and bake

Take the doughs out of the fridge and fill the pastry.

Then crumble the remaining dough evenly over the top

and bake for about 40 minutes in the preheated oven.  Let the tart cool for a few minutes and enjoy!

What to serve with apple crumb tart

Apple crumb tart tastes over the top warm or cold with vanilla ice cream, whipped cream, vanilla sauce, egg liqueur or just like that.

My 1st attempt at Apple crumble. The steps were user friendly and easy to follow for a 1st time non-baker.

I have shared a photo of my tart on your Pinterest.
