Equipment

  • Bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Kitchen machine or hand mixer with dough hooks

Ingredients

  • 300 g (10.6 oz/ 2 ½ cups) plain flour (all purpose flour) plus extra for dusting
  • 1 medium egg
  • 3 tablespoons oil
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 150 g (5.3 oz) Greek yogurt
  • 65 g (2.3 oz/ ⅓ cup ) sugar
  • ½ tablespoon vanilla sugar or 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (just use ½ tablespoon more sugar if you’re using vanilla extract)
  • tablespoons baking powder
  • a pinch of salt
  • 100 g (3.5 oz) chocolate chips

Instructions

  • Begin by preheating the oven to 180°C (392 °F) with both up and low heat. Next, separate the egg, keep the egg yolk aside for later. In a bowl combine yogurt, baking powder, flour, milk, oil, sugar, a pinch of salt and the egg white and knead for about one minute (you don’t want to over knead the dough!).
  • Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and knead for another minute. Then knead in the chocolate chips (leave some to decorate the buns) and shape the dough into a long baguette form. Cut the baguette roll into approximately 10 equal rolls. (Cut the roll in the middle first, it makes it easier to cut the rest of the rolls). Form the rolls into buns and put them on a baking sheet lined with a parchment paper.
    - Always dust your hands with he flour before shaping the rolls into buns.
  • Brush the buns with the egg yolk (that you previously kept aside) mixed with a dash of milk. Gently arrange some chocolate chips on the outside of the buns, so that you will have good looking buns in the end and bake for about 20 minutes or until nicely golden brown and enjoy.
